We're dreaming of a green Christmas this year and with this in mind, we've put together a guide to the perfect sustainable shopping trip at Trinity Leeds...
1. Arrive by bus
Cut carbon emissions by choosing public transport instead of the car (and avoid the stress of Christmas traffic and parking too).
Download the First Bus App and you can buy and store tickets and check real-time information so you know exactly when your bus is due to arrive.
2. Pick up a coffee
Need some caffeine before hitting the shops? Grab a takeaway cup and you can recycle it at any of our specially-designed bins or go one better and pick up a Hotel Chocolat coffee (or embrace the festive season with a Salted Caramel & Clementine Hot Chocolat, topped with cacao whip - pictured) in a 100% compostable Christmas cup.
3. Admire the Christmas lights
Here at Trinity Leeds we purchase all our electricity from 100% renewable sources, meaning that your Christmas lights are powered by solar arrays, windfarms and even hydroelectric power stations from across the UK.
How's that for a festive glow?!
4. Choose sustainable gifts
Opt for greener gifts this Christmas by searching out brands that are making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint, use sustainable ingredients and package their products in biodegradable or recycled materials.
We love the Beauty Kitchen range at Boots, which features all-natural products in reusuable packaging.
5. Embrace glitter-free wrapping paper
Did you know that glittery wrapping paper can't be recycled due to plastic content?
This year, M&S have made the move to get rid of all glitter from its cards, wrapping paper, tags, gift bags, calendars and crackers and replaced them with pretty paper patterns or minimal foils.
6. Donate to St Vincent's food bank
Local charity, St Vincent's Support Centre, is collecting food for those in need this Christmas.
Get in the true spirit of Christmas and make your donation of jars or canned goods at our Customer Service Lounge - it's open until Monday 9th December.
7. Grab a plant-based lunch
A largely plant-based diet is the key to a sustainable future for our planet, and there are plenty of delicious vegan dishes on offer at Trinity Leeds.
8. Trade in your old clothes
Got some less-than-flattering Christmas jumpers lurking at the back of your wardrobe?
Put together a bag of old clothes from any brand, in any condition and hand it in to a H&M cash desk and they will give you a £5 gift voucher to use with any purchase over £25. Merry Christmas indeed!
9. Choose a colourful water bottle
Cut back your plastic consumption by purchasing a refillable, thermal bottle to carry your drinks with you.
10. Fill up at a Refill Me station
Once you have your fancy new bottle, you'll probably want to fill it up!
Drop into any retailer displaying this 'Refill Me' sign and you can top up on tap water, completely free of charge.
At Trinity Leeds we're committed to creating a sustainable approach to rubbish disposal and we've worked hard to ensure that our litter avoids becoming landfill.
In fact, since 2nd December 2018 we have recycled 19,462 coffee cups and plastic bottles!
12. Travel home
Check your First Bus App and grab the next bus home having visited a World Environment award-winning shopping centre!
Who says Christmas has to cost the earth?
