After years of watching Blair Waldorf rule the Upper East Side in Gossip Girl, always armed with a haughty attitude and haute-couture outfits, and countless hours spent studying Clueless's Cher and her preppy, not-so-clueless style, we've often dreamt of running off to Manhattan or the Hamptons to live the American Vogue dream and emulate their iconic lives and style.  A white cream linen skirt with a matching blazer, paired with some pearls, cork heel sandals, and always accompanied with a signature headband.

From primary to secondary school, we wore not only wore them to feel glamorous but also to gym class; the duality of their function and fashion power never lost on us. But some time between the 90’s and the start of the millennium we watched the decline of their dynasty. And we ourselves, quite simply, grew up. Of course as is the case with all big fashion trends, what goes around comes around, and in this case it has come around and straight to the top - of our heads, that is. After the waves of hat and hair accessory trends: berets, hair clips, baker boy caps, it was only normal that headbands came back to make their play for the crown.

But don't go thinking that we're regressing - this season's headband styles are decidedly adult. You can channel Blair and her Constance Billard's School For Girls crew with a uniform-inspired slide-on headband, perfect for the office with a tailored check blazer, boyfriend denim and boots. Or perhaps you could channel St. Tropez chic with a wide scarf that you can tie yourself to keep your hair under wraps as you leisurely lounge poolside on your next overseas jaunt. If your outfit is comprised entirely of monochrome pieces, pick out a printed motif headband with a vivacious flash of colour to enliven your look.

Style it like the accessorising aficionado you are and it will be plain to see that this teenage girl - and her headwear of choice - is all grown up. Just don't let it go to your head.
